Synopsis: Malcolm Bobbitt, member of the Guild of Motoring Writers, puts on record Citroën's achievements during the period 1945-1964. This era is significant for the company insomuch that post-war car production resumed with the Traction Avant, which having been introduced in 1934 remained ahead of its rivals in terms of performance and road-holding. When the diminutive 2CV made its debut in 1948 the qualities of this indefatigable workhorse were quickly appreciated. Several derivatives of the 2CV were built, including a dual-engined four-wheel drive machine destined for desert use. When in 1954 Citroën fitted hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension to the rear axle of its six-cylinder Traction Avant model, there was little indication as to what might follow. The radically engineered DS of 1955 is recognised as being a landmark design and voted as being the most outstanding product of the 20th Century. In the two decades that followed the ending of World War II, Citroën was a leading force in automotive technology. It is not widely known that Citroën assembled vehicles in England, thus significantly contributing to Britain¹s motor industry.
