Synopsis: The vast size and complexity of the Eastern Region, as formed in 1948, proved such a serious problem for the British Railways Board that this new region was created in 1956. From heavily industrialised areas to truly rural branch lines, the North Eastern Region was one of the most fascinating parts of the network.
